What do you collect? What's your focus? We are living in a good time! There is no shortage of things for us to collect. Maybe you collect one of the following...

  • Signed photos

  • Funko Pops

  • Comic Books

  • Vintage toys... sorry, action figures

  • Modern toys like Necca or Diamond Select

  • Magazines

  • Albums

  • Trading cards

  • Cosplay/costume pieces

  • Movie props

  • Replica props

  • DVDs, Blu-rays or VHS tapes

  • Posters (vintage, movie or Mondo)

That's just within the pop-culture genre! I won't even get into Americana, Coca-Cola, Disneyana, Stamps or currency items that people collect!

And, because I mainly collect Star Wars, there is no shortage of the items listed above to collect. I know that many of you feel the same weight and burden that I do... To collect everything that you can! So, I had to make a radical decision recently. I decided to focus on one aspect of my collection... the part that excited me the most... and to stay in that lane! While making that decision was a tough one here's what I find to be true...

When focus increases, options decrease. And having less options can really be a good thing! It means that the amount of time I am searching for a wide variety of items is limited. It means that I am saving money and able to use towards the things that really excite me. It gives me clarity, freedom and it allows me to gain expertise in one area.

Gaining focus is hard because I have seen so many great items that other collectors have. I have even had the opportunity to buy items recently that would be the centerpiece of my collection but I said no. I even sold some items that I truly loved, but didn't lie within my focus. It wasn't easy at all but with my increased focus and decreased options came a lot of freedom and all of the benefits that I said above. I was able to reinvest that money into stuff that I really love!

I decided that the lane that I was going to stay in is signed Star Wars trading cards. Even more specifically... signed, vintage Topps trading cards. It's very specific and I think the more specific our focus, the better off we'll be.

What about you? Do you have a collecting focus? What do you collect and why? I'd love to hear from you. Feel free to leave a comment below.
